Scientific Inquiry in Early Ch essays
Scientific Inquiry in Early Ch essays Scientific Inquiry in Early Childhood Education What is your definition of science? Science, as I see it, is a participating, active procedure that can be defined for us by using the science PROCESSES, just as science CONTENT can be defined by listing the knowledge obtained during the activity. What do the terms SCIENCE PROCESS and SCIENCE CONTENT mean to teachers of young children? It means that we should be aware of the different ways that these two (2) parts of science should be taught. SCIENCE CONTENT, the knowledge of science, can be taught in a vacuum and just memorized. Many of us learned part of our science that way. For some of us that style of learning was painful because we needed concrete experience upon which to hook information that we were to learn. If we were lucky we learned science names and definitions in an active context where we applied each to an experiment we had done. Our young children are unable to accomplish high level abstract thinking; however, knowledge of these process (work) skills of science by the teacher can allow you to develop pre-process or process entry skills. Let us keep in mind that we dont teach reading to three (3) and four (4) year old children, we develop their pre-reading skills. Just as in pre-reading, science process skills have entry or pre-skills that can be used with children to enhance their science success later in elementary school; that is, you can teach them to science. Another good rule-of-thumb in kindergarten science is to keep it process-oriented. Learning content is important, but the method by which children understand and integrate concepts deserves just as much of our respect and attention. The process of science investigation include: By touching, listening, changing, shaking, pouring, and so on, children notice the properties of objects. Teachers can help them articulate their observations, which wi...

Grammar and Writing Tips - Correlative Conjunctions Can You Both Have Your Cake and Eat it too
Grammar and Writing Tips - Correlative Conjunctions Can You Both Have Your Cake and Eat it too If you are writing a college essay, resume or cover letter, you will benefit from this grammar tip on structuring sentences using correlative conjunctions.à A correlative conjunction is a conjunction used with another conjunction that is necessary to complete the thought. Both/and is a popular correlative conjunction pair.à (Other common examples are either/or and not only/but also.)à The word ââ¬Å"both,â⬠when used as a correlative conjunction, is always paired with the word ââ¬Å"and.â⬠For example, ââ¬Å"I like both John and his dad.â⬠Hereââ¬â¢s the tricky part of correlative conjunctions:à The objects or actions they refer to, i.e., the items that fall both before and after the second conjunction (in this case ââ¬Å"andâ⬠) MUST be parallel in construction.à They must, for example, be two nouns or two verbs or two of the same SOMETHING. In the examples above, ââ¬Å"Johnâ⬠and ââ¬Å"his dadâ⬠are both nouns and are thus parallel; ââ¬Å"beforeâ⬠and ââ¬Å"afterâ⬠are both prepositions and are thus parallel.à Here are some more correct ways to use both/and: CORRECT:à That day I saw both the sunrise and the sunset. [ââ¬Å"the sunriseâ⬠is parallel to ââ¬Å"the sunset.â⬠] CORRECT:à That day I saw the sun both rise and set. [ââ¬Å"riseâ⬠is parallel to ââ¬Å"set.â⬠] What people often do is to insert their conjunctions in the wrong place. Fix #1: INCORRECT:à Why is it so hard to accept that someone can both be a woman and a doctor? See how the phrase after ââ¬Å"bothâ⬠(ââ¬Å"be a womanâ⬠) is not parallel to the phrase after ââ¬Å"andâ⬠(ââ¬Å"a doctorâ⬠)?à ââ¬Å"Be a womanâ⬠is a verb phrase, but ââ¬Å"a doctorâ⬠is a noun phrase. How can we fix it?à Just move the word ââ¬Å"bothâ⬠: CORRECT:à Why is it so hard to accept that someone can be both a woman and a doctor? [ââ¬Å"a womanâ⬠is parallel to ââ¬Å"a doctor.â⬠] Fix #2: INCORRECT:à I was interrogated for hours both in Italian and English. [ââ¬Å"in Italianâ⬠is not parallel to ââ¬Å"English.â⬠] CORRECT:à I was interrogated for countless hours in both Italian and English. [ââ¬Å"Italianâ⬠is parallel to ââ¬Å"English.â⬠] Fix #3: INCORRECT:à Iââ¬â¢ve always been committed to progress both in my knowledge and skills. [See the error?] CORRECT:à Iââ¬â¢ve always been committed to progress in both my knowledge and my skills. [ââ¬Å"my knowledge is parallel to ââ¬Å"my skills.â⬠] Fix #4 INCORRECT:à I realized I could use this skill both to help myself and the entire student body. CORRECT:à I realized I could use this skill to help both myself and the entire student body. These errors are often hard to catch in your own writing.à They are extremely common!à I recommend doing a search for the word ââ¬Å"bothâ⬠in your document. Prosperos Mistakes in The Tempest by William Shakespeare Essay
Prosperos Mistakes in The Tempest by William Shakespeare - Essay Example He admitted to wrapping himself up in his studies, so that Antonio, in taking on the Duke's role, actually began to believe he was the rightful duke and that Prospero was incapable of ruling. Prospero seemed unaware of the idea that power can corrupt, as it did with Antonio. His brotherly love and trust blinded him to his brother's faults and actions until it was too late. He was complacent in his belief that his deputy and his team would always be there for him. But he did nothing to keep their loyalty or to lead that team. Antonio was greedy, ambitious and ruthless, using the King of Naples, Prospero's enemy, to help throw his brother and niece into exile. He loved power and looked for more. This showed on the island, when he plotted with Sebastian to kill old Gonzalo, who loved Prospero and stood in his way of taking over Naples. In exile, Prospero changed, he was forced to examine the situation and find the resources in himself and his environment in order to survive. He taught Miranda, and Caliban the monster, but always controlled them. Ariel, his spirit helper, might be seen as his deputy, but Prospero gave the orders, checked progress and examined the results of every activity with discussion and consultation. He took charge of an alien world and managed it so as to reach the desired outcomes. He no longer took anything on trust, but set tests and conditions, and gave explanations. As in the case of Ferdinand's love for Miranda; he tested him before giving consent to a betrothal. "I tender to thy hand. All thy vexations Were but trials of thy love," (Act 4, Sc.1, v. 5-6) His experiences in life had not made him bitter, he learned a great deal on the magic island away from the real world. But he wanted to be back in business, taking up his rightful role as the Duke of Milan. To do this, Prospero understood the need to show who was in charge, but at the same time, to put the past behind him and offer forgiveness. His management skills had developed to a point where he was capable of organizing everybody and everything to his satisfaction, in order to achieve the final result that he wanted, but with no hard feelings. He showed how he felt about it when he said: "Yet with my nobler reason 'gainst my fury Do I take part: the rarer action is In virtue than in vengeance;" (Act 5, Sc.1, v.25-28) In the end, Prospero had power as himself, without spirits or magic, having kept his word and set Ariel free. By forgiving his enemies, he showed himself to be a stronger leader than when he landed in exile. He had learned never to take anything or any person at face value, to look at people's characters and motives and to always maintain control. And finally, to move forward and work together. Abrasive Consultant Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Abrasive Consultant - Essay Example Peter Drucker was of the opinion that ââ¬Å"We know nothing about motivation. All we can do is write books about it.â⬠(Spillane and Martin, 2005, pg. 46). Although Drucker had a rather hopeless view on the subject, from a psychological perspective it is possible to conjecture about an individualââ¬â¢s agendas. To consider the possible reasons for Juliaââ¬â¢s behavior, we must first analyze her personality type. An abrasive personality is one that annoys others and causes hostility as a result. The dictionary meaning also lists synonyms that include ââ¬Ëoverly aggressiveââ¬â¢. Abrasive behavior that is erratic, resulting in heightened conflict, the blame game, ambiguity, overt contempt, and defensiveness is typically seen as an outward symptom of hidden feelings of inadequacy and fear. In addition, there is a self-generated environment which, according to theorists, is another complex layer in the relationship between human behavior and environment. The concept post ulates a particular type of behavior produces conditions that affect future behavior. For instance, individuals who have abrasive personalities, contribute to the creation of a social environment that is hostile, leading to further aggression from them. This is a self-perpetuating cycle sustained by the aggressive individual. Granted the state of a parentââ¬â¢s health can be an emotional issue, but Julia could easily have made a few calls herself to verify her motherââ¬â¢s health. This lapse and her subsequent rant at Cathy at the office indicate a tendency toward manipulative behavior, either conscious or subconscious. Cathyââ¬â¢s feelings of guilt are a direct result of her being emotionally blackmailed by Julia into feeling guilty. This manipulation results in a role reversal, where Julia, who in actuality has a subordinate position, assumes a dominant role, forcing Cathy into a subservient one. Indeed, Julia may derive a secret pleasure from this short-lived but repeate d forced reversal and dominance. It also results in the vital issue of client dissatisfaction not being addressed, again, due to the manipulative tactics Julia may have adopted to avoid being warned.

Is Strategic Leadership Necessary to Effectively Manage Global Strategy in Todays Essay Example for Free
Is Strategic Leadership Necessary to Effectively Manage Global Strategy in Todays Essay Critically evaluate whether strategic leadership is necessary to effectively manage global strategy in todayââ¬â¢s turbulent business environment In todayââ¬â¢s environment, companies need more and more flexibility to success in a rapidly changing world which evolves constantly over the year. It is interesting to speculate if a strategic leader is necessary to lead the company to the success and to well manage the global strategy of the firm. The term of leadership is hard to define and there are over 400 definitions of what it really is. Leadership can be in a poetic way, according to Warren Bennis, ââ¬Å"like beauty: itââ¬â¢s hard to define but you know it when you see itâ⬠. Or in a more concrete way, we can say that leadershipâ⬠is a matter of making a difference. It entails changing an organization and making choices among plausible alternatives. It depends on the development of others and mobilizing them to get the job done. ââ¬Å"(Useem, 2001). Consequently, strategic leadership is the vision of the leader, the directions chosen by him to lead the company to the success. Strategic Leadership consists also in persuading the members of the organization in order to build an organizational structure whose aim is the strategic productivity. (managementstudyguide. com, 2010). This concept of strategic leadership is more and more important in a context of global strategy. Indeed, nowadays, it is more and more usual to globalize its company in order to gain in productivity and performance. Thus, the global strategy of a company is somehow, a kind of strategic guide to succeed in the globalization process. This is a guide which permits the company to go ahead the barriers to international trade by gaining competitive advantages according to (quickmba. com, 2010). A global strategy must ask itself some questions like what must be the presence on the market in each country? How to build an international global presence? Regarding to these two important aspects of a business, it is interesting to wonder if the strategic leadership is related to the global strategy and more precisely if the strategic leadership is necessary to success in globalizing its company within this turbulent business environment. The strategic leadership may have an impact on the global strategy of a firm; nevertheless, strategic leadership is sometimes subject to some issues which can impair the viability of the company and its potential success. Indeed, the leaders have a lot of pressure, they have to deliver results and manage the personal, which is more and more complicated in a changing world directed by the development of new technologies which implicated more and more reactivity. And sometimes leaders can make mistakes, Gerald Ratner, CEO of Barclays Bank, has said in front of TV cameras and reporters that he didnââ¬â¢t have a credit card because itââ¬â¢s too expensive! That wasnââ¬â¢t very professional Thus, the position of the leader is always a kind of a precarious position because he has to make decisions which will determine the success of the company. Charan and Colvin (The quest for quality of work life: a TQM approach) highlight some strategic mistakes that a leader could make, some misjudgements which can lead to issues in term of strategic leadership. The first one may be people related. Indeed people canââ¬â¢t be underestimating, and sometimes it happens, people of an organization are the glue of this one, so it is necessary to understand people skills to have a harmony in the corporation, especially in terms of relationships, according to Bill Donaldson and Tom Oââ¬â¢toole (strategic market relationships: from strategy to implementation, 200), ââ¬Å"personal contact cannot be underestimatedâ⬠. So it is crucial to have some strategic leadership to make sure that everybody is held at fair value. Moreover, another difficulty for the leader is to fail putting the right people at the right place, this task requires a analysis of each people in the staff in order to place them in the job in which they are the most efficient and in which they will work the best and do their best contribution. According to Buckingham and Coffman (1999) in their bookâ⬠First, Break All the Rules: What The Worlds Greatest Managers Do Differentlyâ⬠, they put forward twelve questions which are really useful to put people in the adapted job (bainvestor. om, 2010). Another people related problem can be the fail to deal with managers who are underperforming. The decision making process is also seen as a issue in strategic Leadership, some decisions are not made which can implied a cost in term of time and money. The leader has to use good tactics to make their decisions. The problem is that, according to Nutt (researchnews. osu. edu, 2010) a good tactic in decision making require time and leaders are looking for quick fixes, but over the long term, theses tactics turn out to be successful. Beyond these issues, the leaders have also to face some challenges in particularly concerning the environment which is changing. Lao Tzu says that ââ¬Å"resisting change is like holding your breath; if you persist, you dieâ⬠. The challenge that faces the leader is how to adapt them to a changing environment, and more precisely in this context of globalization, because the employee may feel suspicious relative to the change. This kind of barrier has to be destroyed by the leader by setting objectives, having open discussions with employee or showing their commitment. Manage the employee is a challenge, but the nature of the strategic environment is another one. According to (airpower. au. af. mil, 2010), there are four components which can be seen as challenges to the strategic leader: Complexity, Ambiguity, uncertainty and volatility. The leaders have to anticipate scenario to avoid volatility (ex Bosnia/Kosovo), and to highlight the act of the competitors to reduce the uncertainty and the complexity of the interdependence of the components. Moreover, the ambiguity can be solved by working in team; this work will permit not to have multiple interpretation of one problem for example. As said before, the economic world has change over the past few years, with notably the financial crisis which has affect business productivity. This event shows us that the situation can change one day to another. Thus Brigid L. Bechtold explains in his book ââ¬Å"Chaos theory as a model for strategy developmentâ⬠, the necessity of putting in place news strategies to balance a random economic situation. Moreover, the author emphasize the notion of interaction between the company which are now interdependent, a strategic leadership must deals with this situation in order to communicates and acts conscientiously, and notably in the case of corporate parenting. The corporate parenting has to set priority for the strategic leadership. Corporate parenting is a management which is intern to the company, no others actors of the market are taking in account; there are no interaction with others actors such as competitors or buyers. The aim of corporate parenting is to give value to the firm, but these operations require money and generate cost. There are three different types of this kind of management, strategic planning, strategic control and financial control. The strategic planning puts resources together in order to reinforce each business units to achieve a common goal, for example providing central services and resources. The strategic control consist in using the corporate parent ability to build some value for the business and finally under the financial control type the corporate parent evaluate and ontrol the performance of each business unit (scribd. com, 2010 ), and then business units are more independent even if they are subject to performance standards. The corporate parenting provide thus a clear image of the strategy to all the business units, managers can focus on the same goal. Moreover, a corporate parent can interfere and guides its business units if they are underperforming for example. A s an example we can talk about Virgin which is the perfect example of a successful corporate parenting: Robabdul. com, 2010 Virgin was able to understand and institutionalized markets, but also in terms of innovation, by buying and created partnership with good skilled company. Moreover the management is flexible and gives flexibility to business units. (robabdul. com, 2010) But the corporate parenting can also destroy value instead of adding this one. (accessmylibrary. com, 2010), some might say that the destruction of the value is created by the ââ¬Å"level of corporate overhead costsâ⬠, but even if these costs are high, it is not the principal cause of failure. The most often, the influence of the parent are bad, because they put in place invalid objectives and unsuitable strategies. Thus, the managers have to use this strategic leadership of the corporate parents to develop the same and adequate strategy within the business units and the strategic leadership must be aware of the objectives given to ensure that they are realizable. In a context of globalization, this corporate parenting can face culture issues which can impact on the global strategy. The globalization is a phenomenon which is more and more spread; itââ¬â¢s a new way of working and in to manage people who come from different countries, some authors had created some dimensions dealing with cultural dimensions and the different value orientations. Indeed the majority of these workers donââ¬â¢t understand the attitude and the reactions of their colleagues because of the culture which includes different ways of thinking or acting. A strategic leadership has to leverage on cultural difference for competitive advantage. To create opportunities of collaboration a strategic leader must understand the management philosophy and the national character, to help this, Greet Hofstede created dimensions (hofstede. com, 2010) which permit to analyze and understand people from a different culture. A good strategic leadership is needed to manage these cultural gaps, because culture can be assimilating to the driving force beyond a man behavior. To succeed in a multicultural environment, the leaders must adopt the concept of global leadership, (Managing cultural differences: global leadership strategies for the 21st century, by Robert T.à Moran,Philip R. Harris,Sarah Virgilia Moran, Butterworth-Heinemann, 2007 ), they have to be capable of operating in the globalized world and being respectful of each culture, he must be flexible and open in order to perceive and understand people reactions. Companies have also to take care of what they said, if they didnââ¬â¢t pay attention to their slogan, they can get into trouble, thus the slogan of American Airlines ââ¬Å"Fly in Leatherâ⬠has been translated in Spanish by ââ¬Å"fly nakedâ⬠(brandingstrategyinsider. com, 2010). To have this open-minded spirit, the relationship between management and strategic leaderships must be define The leadership, and more particularly the strategic leadership are the eyes of an organisation, they have to see what is coming, to anticipate the future in order to give the opportunities to the company to create the future. Instead, the management, according to the figure, is more about execution. Indeed, the management deals with organization, they follow and accomplish the mission given by the leadership, they have to ââ¬Å"comprehends the vision and the road mapâ⬠(relationship-economy. com, 2010). A good example of the relation Leader/manager is the story of the creation of the iMac by Apple. 2-speed. com, 2006) The ex-CEO of Viewlogic relates its anecdote: all the work on the iMac was done, the product was about to be launched when Steve Jobs, a great leader, require that the case for the computer has to be transparent. This resulted in additional cost and engineering work had to be restarted because it has to be pretty either. This story shows well the differences of vision between a leader and a manager; Steve Jobs has seen the importance of the design over the long term and put the base of Apple competitive advantage. Relationship-economy. com, 2010 In this climate of economic uncertainty, the role of the strategic leadership within the global strategy is important notably speaking of the globalization phenomenon which is playing a major role in the business environment of today. Strategic leaders are necessary because they are the inspiration of the company, the guide of the managers. As seen before, in terms of corporate parenting, strategic leadership plays a crucial role in the success of the different business units, but sometimes, it happens that the influence of this one compromise the viability of the different business units. Globally speaking, a company has often resort to internationalize itself, to succeed in this way a strategic leadership must be set, in order to understand and leverage of cultural differences. Concerning the relationship between the relationship between management and strategic leadership, they have a special relationship, on could not function without the other. Whitout the execution of the ideas of the strategic leader, these ones would be useless. These two concepts are interdependent, the management deals with organizing, planning and answers short terms questions, while conversely, the strategic leader responds to long terms issues and determines the position of the company and its strategic direction. The strategic leader must communicate to the company values. He should increase the belief of employees in the company and be transparent and involve them in their role. It must be open in order to speak freely of market information, because employees want to know where the company is going and want to know what the leader knows. It is also important for the leader to take into account the opinions of everyone. Indeed even if the decisions that are not suitable with the wish of the employees, having been listening reinforce their membership to the business. Even if there are bad decisions making by some strategic leaders, (notably speaking of the CEO of the banks which didnââ¬â¢t pay attention to the mistakes that they have done and start the financial crisis), they are necessary in the global strategy of a company but some strategic leadership can be at the origin of failure and being not adapted to some kind of company. Thus strategic leadership is important to manage global strategy to give confidence and to innovate in the turbulent environment. But to avoid some mistake the management can be stricter and let more place to concrete work instead of just ideas in order to stabilize and create a secure environment for the business. Why Do Emotions Exist? :: essays research papers
à à à à à Pervading us with an array of highs and lows, ranging from anger and sadness, to love, joy, and contentment, emotions vividly affect our daily lives. So, unequivocally it could be asked, ââ¬Å"Why do emotions exist?â⬠It is possible that the sole, underlying principle of emotions is to create a reaction in people and things in our environment; or perhaps they exist to be our governing channel of communication; or maybe they precisely exist to regulate individual self-confidence and disparage. à à à à à The theory that emotions have a sole principle to generate reactions amongst people, things, and their environment, is very conceivable. Every emotion has a cause and effect, and frequently, both are a reaction in others around us. Perhaps the emotions that are expressed by the opening individual have no direct affect on that individual, but on others, and the reaction emotions of others are what cause the effects on the individual. It could be a repetitive chain of events that begins and ends alike. à à à à à Since emotions are typically needed to communicate successfully, this gives way to the possibility that emotions exist to be our governing channel of communication. The level of understandability and intensity of communication is exceedingly dependant on the amount of emotion used. Emotionless verbal communication is complex to understand, uninteresting and monotonous. Emotionless nonverbal communication is generally next to impossible to comprehend, and is the borderline of understanding and bewilderment. Communication could be straightforwardly thought of as expressed emotion. à à à à à Maybe, instead of, or in addition to, having a principle to create reactions and to be a major channel of communication, emotions precisely exist to regulate individual self-confidence and disparage. External, as well as internal, emotions are often used to compliment and criticize a personââ¬â¢s own character. Emotions control a personââ¬â¢s level of confidence, or lack there of, in their success and individuality. Perhaps this self-determining strength and weakness alike could be the rationale. à à à à à ââ¬Å"Why do emotions exist?â⬠is a question that could be answered with numerous possibilities; each of those possibilities being parallel to other.

Different Symbolic Meanings of Animals in Poems Essay
In the poem ââ¬Å"The Fishâ⬠written by Elizabeth Bishop, the story of the speakerââ¬â¢s moment catching a large fish was narrated. It was a sort of a descriptive writing wherein the speaker is using the first person recounts his/her story and what she thought and felt in that instance of catching a fish. But looking closely to the poem while analyzing the structure, the composition and the words used, we will be able to see that Elizabeth Bishop did not write just as a description of a memorable moment in a personââ¬â¢s life, it has a message lying under the verses. The speaker in the poem was describing herself while on her boat, in the middle of a particular body of water, while holding the fish that she caught in her hands, she has described the fish as ââ¬Å"battered and venerable and homelyâ⬠. In her description, any reader would see that the words she used possessed sympathy and boldness. The fish that the speaker was talking about has a shiny grey mouth which was filled with different hooks, and Bishop used this part of the poem to explicitly symbolize pain and suffering, and it is an instance for the speaker to face up to that which is by and large introverted and not seen. But together with her highly crafted, emotionally stressed description, the speaker can be seen as an advocate of art who possess an ability to interpret this suffering or agony just by using the concept of a ââ¬Å"five haired beard of wisdom. â⬠As the speaker commemorates her mastery as the only one who has been able to catch the fish and hold it her hands, the poem closed stages successfully in the company of the contradicting suggestions that creativity is brought into being by means of devastation: Bishop brought to a close, by explicitly saying that ââ¬Å"suffering can be the impetus for the imaginationâ⬠. On the other hand, in the short story by W. D. Wethrell about a large mouth bass entitled ââ¬Å"The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mantâ⬠, the story of a 14-year old boy and his undying infatuation that eventually turned into love for a 17-year old girl named Sheila Mant, is told. This boy who can be considered as obsessed to Sheila had the courage to ask Sheila out for a date, Sheila then agreed to go with him. To cut it short, in the evening of the dance the boy set up well his canoe for him to use it to pick up Sheila; in their moment in the canoe the boy then had a dilemma between reeling in a large Mouth Bass or cutting the string and gain Sheilaââ¬â¢s love. The story ended up with the boy deciding to cut the fishing line. In this story the author, Wethrell probably used the description of the size of the Bass, which was mentioned to be large, to as well describe how much he loves Sheila and also to describe the good qualities he saw in Sheila. The dilemma the boy felt between the reeling in of the fish and letting it go, most likely explicitly says something about holding on or letting go of Sheila, which would determine if the saying ââ¬Å"the only perfect love is the one that gets awayâ⬠will be true for him. And for the third literary work which will be ââ¬Å"Traveling through the Darkâ⬠by William Stafford, recounted a story of the speaker in the poem who found a dead deer with an unborn fawn inside her. This deer mentioned, as described in the poem, was killed by a car hit, the speaker stressed out that he went near and checked on the dear that is why he had been able to describe how the dead deer looked and felt lying on the edge of Wilson River road. This poem by Stafford hides under its verses its true meaning which is in relation with the search for the ultimate truth. The narrator in the poem speaks with what appears to be like a maxim authority that is hard earned. And the poem tells us in atypical means that the choices we are going to make conceivably should be similar to the choices made by the speakers in the poem.
